Papers, 1881-1924.

This collection contains correspondence of and a partial manuscript by James Lane Allen, a noted Kentucky novelist. The collection consists of two series. One contains twenty-two letters written by Allen to Miss Elizabeth Kinkead of Lexington (1890-1910). Some are also addressed to Miss Kinkead's sister Nellie. The letters discuss Allen's travels in Europe and the United States, his writings, and a planned history of Kentucky by Kinkead. A potential conflict between Kinkead's history and an anthology of Kentucky tales to be compiled by Allen is discussed at length.
